For example, unlike in the movie, the French refugee farmers were helping Germans, caring for their horses (including Joey and Topthorn) that pull wounded soldiers to the hospital tents nearby. The wounded would walk down the farm to visit. When these Germans left they left Joey and Topthorn with that French family. The horses lived at the farm happily for awhile, then more Germans came. Time had past and these soldiers were desperate and cruel and raided the farm and took the horses.

War Horse is just supposed to show the experiences on all sides of the war through the neutral horse being passed through new hands. How as the war dragged on conditions and people got harsher. It touches on how cavalry was dying and warfare changing and even the fine riding horses were only useful hauling guns and wounded. WW1/trench warfare is nasty. The book did this better than the movie all on accounts but the movie was beautiful visually. I've not seen the but the puppets are incredible.

Must be the same hacks who came up with the puppets/costumes for The Lion King on Broadway...

also, the way joey is lit makes him look like hes made out of red sandstone which is not a color horses come in...including the visible human legs in khaki pants i felt like i was watching a sculpture move about on stage, which i know sounds amazing but it really takes you out of the moment and makes joey feel stiffer than its actual movements, especially when you see the beautiful big black horse that was INCREDIBLY life like

just saw the show a few days ago, mindBLOWING puppetry but i have to admit i found the play as disappointingly boring as the movie was, the story alone just seemed really weak, and nothing seemed to be a greater metaphor for anything, like the era or the society etc. plus i dont know if it was an off night or what but the acoustics of the voices were pretty terrible compared to most theatres in london iv been to and the lead boy didnt seem to be acting so much as earnestly shouting his lines...
