"Americana" is a film produced and directed by David Carradine. David also played the lead and performed the title music "Let me take you around". Production commenced in 1973 however it was not completed until 1983 due to financial problems and David's other acting commitments. The story line is based around a returned Vietnam veteran who seems to be on as soul searching journey by walking across America. When passing through a the bleak, backwater town of Drury, Kansas he comes across a derelict carousel and finds a mysterious personal crusade to restore it.It is interesting to note the town of Drury in real life sits in the geological center of America and the carousel rests in the middle of town, The Soldier, who is emotionally wounded by his service in Vietnam may be attempting to find personal solice by metaphorically repairing the shattered heart of his country after the Vietnam conflict by carefully tending to the collapsed and rotting carousel. This seemingly simple and kind gesture polarizes the local community who both hinder and embrace his efforts. As he is drawn into the community he is both confronted then challenged by its darker shadows that appear to offer the acceptance and gateway required to finish what he started. This is a significant work of American realist cinema however I could find very little information on the picture or a trailer for it.I have put together this tribute /trailer that hopefully captures some of the haunting undercurrent of David's otherwise introspective and quiet film.Drury, Kansas now appears on goggle street view and various locations can be found including the building with the carousel horse sign post in front of it. (0:50 in the video). The carousel which I believe was trucked in for the film is gone from its site.I recently received email from a long resident of Drury from who appeared in the film as an extra, says town currently has a population of 7 people ...and 13 dogs!. The following letter is from Doug David who gives a charming insite into the characters and good will that spirited the production of 'Americana'------------------- ---------From talking with my parents, they pretty sure the carousel was brought in for the movie. They gave Toots one of the horses after they finished shooting the movie. My Uncle still owns the horse, where he has it in their home in Wichita, Ks. David, Barbara and Free their daughter, and most of the people in the movie, lived in tents in my Great Aunt's backyard. Her name was Peg Harrison. Peg lived to be 96, she a had a wonderful spirit for life. They would have Peg watch there Daughter Free, while they were making the movie. Peg would let them use her kitchen and house when they needed it. She really enjoyed the experience. The old ruin of a building was an old church, this is where they shot the dog fight scene. My sisters and I would tinker around in the scary looking skeleton of a church when we were kids. The Chikaskia River runs through Drury, It is seen through out the movie. The scene where the men are chasing Barbara is located where we would regularly fish.Mr. Blue owned the garage-gas station, and Cecil Mitchel owned the store. Cecil was like a grandpa to me, he was Toots neighbor. Toots lived to be 93. She was very talented in music. The pictures of her as young woman, showed how pretty she was. Her dream was to be an actress. At one time she was asked to go Hollywood and try out for the silent movies. Her parents would not let her. When she had a part in the movie, this fulfilled her longtime dream of being in a picture show! There was a famous actor that attended the same school that my Mom, Toots, Peg and Uncle attended, his name was Max Showalter. I had a chance to sit and talk with him at the 1984 Caldwell High School Class Reunion. He was very interesting and funny. I joked with him about his role as the Minister in the movie Ten. He was known for his part in Niagra. Peg was recognized as the oldest grad to be at that all grad class reunion; she was 95. When my Grandma passed away, David was acting in a play in Wichita at the time. He was notified about her death and sent his condolences. My name is Doug David, I live in Howard, Ohio. This brings back a lot of found memories my family and I shared while spending time in 'the center of America!' Drury is a small burg of a spot on the map, but when Americana was being filmed there, it was a shining, booming port for all the fans, newspaper photograghers, and TV stations that wanted to see the famous actors and actresses making this movie.Well, thanks again for the interest and promoting a movie that still keeps the flame of Toots and Peg alive in my families hearts. Thanks, Doug David-----------------------------"RIP Grasshopper"David Carradine (December 8, 1936 June 3, 2009)Disclaimer: Tribute only.I do not own the rights to "Americana (1983)"

If you claim to have sold this movie 30 years ago, then why does it show your 22 on your profile?

David wasn't a bad singer. He & his brother all play/ed guitar too. I thought he was excellent in the movie "Bound for Glory" (1976), in his portrayal of Woody Guthrie. David well be missed.

i literally live 6 or 7 minutes from Drury. Its a ghost town now (if it wasnt already when this film was made). hardly anyone lives there, but alot of people fish at the dam. A horse from the merry go round is in a white museum on the corner, across the street, west of the Sumner County Courthouse in Wellington K.S. in one of the upper floors if they havent gotten rid of it. it has a sign next to it talking about what it was from.

Dan Haggerty (of Grizzly Adams fame) had a small part and did the set design, primarily the restoration of the carousel. He also provide the "fighting" dog, Masagwa, who appears credited, as does Carradine's dog, Buffalo. One day Carradine was trying to decide which type-style to use for "Around" (which is what the movie was tentatively called) he settle on one called "Americana" and decided that that should be the name of the movie as well.

DC and Barbara Hershey first heard of the "Merry-go-round" story from Richard Carr while they were making "Heaven With A Gun". DC said that he became obsessed with the idea of making it a film. He talked Carr into writing the screenplay and cast his friends, family members and some town folks in it. The old man at the store is BH's father and he died before they had filmed the final scenes.

You did a fantastic job on this trailer. It is perfect. Since I saw your trailer I bought this movie on VHS and have seen it a couple of times and I have read DC's Endless Highway. There is a good article online call "Carradine's Americana was one from the heart". I tried posting the link, but it did not post. If you are looking for more information on it, that article has some, so do a search. It is a little heart breaking. I wish DC could have seen your trailer. He would have loved it.
