My parents don't speak it but they did teach me welsh mythology. I'm 20 now and despite how horrible the education system is for teaching welsh I am learning on my own because I know how important it is. Encourage it because if you don't it will be lost. (I live in Gwent). :]

Yes i wish i could speak too....i live in Llangollen,North Wales and my father speaks fluent, but my mother is welsh but not speaking so the common problem here is that when you don't speak at home, it gets lost ,and that's why unfortunately my children won't speak it.

Ahh, that's very interesting! I didn't realise he'd learnt Welsh! Thank you for sharing!

I think one needs to understand the man who wrote the lyrics - Harri Webb. He was a Welshman who had English as his mother tongue - much to his sadness. He learnt to speak Welsh. Much later in life he said that he had stopped writing in English as it was "a dead language." He was a character, a staunch Welsh Nationalist and Socialist. He was born in Swansea, he spent a lot of his life resident in the Aberdare valley, where I was born. He was the subject of my doctoral thesis.
