I thought Anand was the #1 player in the world, and Carlsen was #2.

The difference separating Karpov and Kasparov during the World Championship was paper thin, or non existent. However, those matches (2 of them) were the greatest lesson in positional chess that Kasparov ever learned. Karpov, Capa and Smyslov have to be one of the greatest positional players that ever lived. Kasparov balanced his game to a Fischer-like completeness and was unstoppable after that. Before that Kasparov relied too much on combinational brilliance.

Karpov is a classy dude, unlike that jag-off Kasparov.
