It's been developed over many years. We use commercial software in many other areas though, such as animation (Maya) and compositing (Flame/Inferno, Nuke, After Effects), etc.

In the beginning of the movie there is this spaceship battle/chase between the autobots and decepticons and the spaceships sound like the x-wings from the old star wars movies. not exactly but it definitely sounds familiar
