The drummer always thinks thing are too slow. The Beach Boys arrangement and wonderful harmonies are fantastic and it has to be the right speed to fully experience that.

Yeah, I heard that Dennis Wilson always felt that this song was too slow, so he used to speed it up when they did it live towards the mid 70's. Search for the 1966 live version they did with Carl Wilson on lead vocals, it's play to the original speed, and he is at his near vocal best :)
