The Avengers - Film Review (submitted for Reddit discussion)
(Edit: God I love this website, this eases my pain somewhat:
Ah where to start. There’s so many things in this movie that pissed me off.
Overall, the continuing contempt which Hollywood plot-writers are showing
for the audience’s intelligence bothers me, but not as much as the fact
that perhaps it’s because audiences simply don’t care for a coherent
storyline anymore as long as there’s enough explosions and fighting.
Can we briefly review the supporting character’s motives as they shape the
story-line but are only revealed to us later in the film:
The Bad Guy
Objective: Summon your aliens through the portal to take over world
Tools: Portal, ability to disapparate, glowstick which bends man’s will to
1. Gate-crash Earth through this portal that Earth scientists are tinkering
2. Steal the portal tool
3. Find energy source, and open portal
4. Summon your buddies and take over the world
2.1 Let yourself get captured by Avengers team
2.2 Sit in a cage on their ship
2.3 Predict that they will ask the Hulk along
2.4 Assume the Hulk will wreck the ship
2.5 Get rescued by your team
2.6 Proceed to Step 3
And what about Fury, the Avengers event manager:
Objective: Stop bad guy
1. Find and destroy bad guy
2. Find and destroy portal tool
0.1 Enlist the Hulk and Iron Man to do all your scientific tracking of the
0.2 Enlist Captain America to give Iron Man motivational talks
0.3 Get in four-propellor flying machine of death with clearly useless
cloaking technology, while inviting a green powerhouse of destruction along
for the party
It also upsets that the imminent destruction of civilisation isn’t any sort
of motivation for them. It’s only when their buddy gets killed that Iron
Man puts his thinking cap on. And, oh, f*ck all the science that only he
and the Hulk had just failed at, once he stops to think he knows exactly
where the portal will be. Proceed to Step 2.
What bothers me the MOST, are the complete mis-matches at play here. Simply:
Thor > Iron Man > Captain America
God > Metal Man with lots of energy guns > Bodybuilder in pyjamas
The guy on the protein shakes does not break up a fight between these two
with his fancy shield, he would get absolutely bitch-slapped.
As for the bad guy vs humanity? This god can teleport, unless he’s in a
fancy glass cage, and bend men to his will, unless they get a bang on the
head. And his minions are useless, how were the big monsters going to take
over the world, by bumping into everything? All the little guys had to do
was stay up on their jet-skis and shoot from the skies, and that would have
f*cked everyone except Iron Man, but instead they land and get squashed.
Am I just being anal and missing the point in expecting any sort of
intelligence in a plot, or is this something Hollywood needs to improve on?
